harder and harder

for some reason these portrait are getting harder and harder for me to do.  i have to look at the picture for hours, before i can work on it.  i still have problems with the skin tones.  i am using photoshop element to break down the picture.  there are people who are just tracing the picture and getting the same results.  that is the way i want to do my portrait. instead of playing with the computer to get what i want.  i just order a book by aniko feher who makes portrait quilts.  i hope this book will help me out, because i don't like the fact that it takes me days to get one portrait made.  the other techique only took me a couple of hours to do.the prince portrait took me two months to do.  i don't like working on things to long, i get bore and throw it in the corner somewhere.

check out what i have done so far.  i will quilt it tonight.

stitches for now1

This is beautiful! I get bored with stuff that takes too long, too. But, really, this is smashing.

You caught Oprah just right, and you even got that funny shadow on the right side of her face. This is just beautiful, Yetunde; congratulations on another great portrait!

I have just signed up for a fiber arts portrait class. Hope it doesn't take me months to finish it. Your Oprah looks very good to me. Hope I can do as well.

Beautiful likeness. Do you think it takes longer because we become more demanding of ourselves? I find the better I know my subject, the easier it is to portray him or her. Just finished an engagement portrait of a friend's son and his fiancé that took me almost a year to complete (well between other projects too)., but mainly because details of features showed differently on photos and I didn't know subjects myself.

These books are in my library and maybe you could check them out at your local library. The Marilyn Belford Book is very detailed and Julia C. Wood shows the reader how to create the portrait quilts without the use of computers just in case the quilter does not have the software
*Leni Levenson Weiner-Photo-Inspired Art Quilts
*Marilyn Belford- Portraits for Fabric Lovers (very detailed book)
*Julia C. Wood- Fabric Photo Play
* Maria Elkins –Quilting Arts DVD on Photo Inspired Quilting ( this DVD showed computer usage and her style is just like Julia C. Wood’s in her book.
Also, you could dye fabric with tea bags in order to make African American skin tones in order to get it just right.

Also, Yetunde you can search for a more tutorials on the Textile Arts Resource Page. Here is a link on Leni Weiner's blogspot on skin tones. Here is the link about skin tones:
Choosing Colors and Fabrics for Skin Tones - Leni Wiener
http://blog.leniwiener.com/?p=1086

It may serve as something you could use. Leni's tutorial is similiar to Marilyn Belford's info her book about skin tone as well

Happy Quilting
