long time

it has been a long time since i have blog. i have been kind of busy. and my creativity have not been going to good. i have tried several time to do a portrait quilt and the faces were not coming out to good. i was trying to use application from the ipad to make my portrait quilt and it was not coming out like i wanted it to. even when i went back to photoshop element on my laptop, i was still having problems getting portraits the way i wanted. but i think this one is coming out ok. i was trying to do my friends picture of her son and a coworkers picture and i was having problems. so i gave up on them. and just took a break from it for a while. it takes me longer to get the picture the way i want it to break down into different shades. i am having problem with breaking down the different shading in the face to help me make it into a quilt. if anyone knows of an application with ipad that is very much like photoshop element please let me know. there are a few things that i still have to use my laptop for, like doing my portrait quilts... i am getting use to the ipad and i want to try to use that more because it much lighter than the laptop. here is a picture of what i have started so far. it is not complete but here is what i have done so far. i found the face off the internet. but guess what it still does not lot the original picture. but i like it any way.

more zen gifts

well, i am making more gifts. my back is feeling a little better, so i trying my hand at machine quilting. i am drawing zentangle on fabric and then i am making them into small little purses. someone at my guild had did a workshop on making them and i can not find the instructions that were give out so i am making them from memory. i was doing something else when the person was doing the workshop. they are a little different from the ones they made at the guild. here's a picture of what i made.

a couple of weeks back at wee bee quilter's group we had a jellyroll race and i came in second place. first person who finish first will win a roll of jellyroll fabric. i was really surprise that i came in second place. i won a small jellyroll. gwen came in first place, it was fun doing this. this was the second time since i had been at a sewing machine since my problem with my back. while we were doing the race a couple of time i thought about stopping. i felt my back getting a little stiff, charlene who was in charge of the race gave us a 10 minute break and that helped and then we started again. later gwen shouted out first and then i shouted out 15 minutes later that i was finish, that was the longest 15 minute, it felt like a hour. i thought my back would be sore the next day by lugging the sewing machine around, but i was ok. here is a pictues of what we did.

i am the one hiding my face and gwen is the one in the middle. my other pictures are on my ipad, and i am still learning how to use it. don't know how to transfer pictures yet. i am using my laptop right now.

the holiday's are coming and every year i make gifts for my family and quilting friends. since i have been doing zentangle, i have decided to do some zentangle on fabric, bags and cards. i have been working on a lady that i have been drawing on fabric. this will be made into a quilt. it will be call Ms. Zen, i really like how it looks. i might make this a red and white quilt. i am also zentangling on bags and i am still trying to decide if i am going to keep making them for my family. i am also doing a little knitting. so with all these projects going on somebody will at least get something from me. i am zentangle on cards and drawing names on the cards. the grand kids and a couple of nieces will get gift cards from me. and a couple of x-box games for the boys. my back and knees are still giving me problems so no shopping in the malls.

here are some pictures of what i have been doing. still working on the lady, here are a few cards that i have been making for my quilting friends. most of the time i usually make quilt related item for my quilting friends. the bags are for some of my cousins and one for a friends birthday present. i know thanksgiving is not here yet and i am talking about gift making. i like to start early, don't want to feel rush.

someone asked me which one of my quilt's was my favorite. well, i have several that are my favorite.

the nude man, was a photo that i just love. i love the look of a man's body, the look of their muscles just amaze me.

if you look at the woman's face very closely you will see a fetus in her face. i didn't realize it was there until someone told me. the quilt is call, "baby on my mind."

the clown: is a motown song call, "tears of a clown."

all i can say about prince, is that i just love his music, specially "purple rain."

well since i did a nude man, i had to do a woman.

bob marley: love his music and love the meaning of some of his songs.

lawrence fishburne: love any movies that he has ever act in.

these are some of my first pieces that i started making after i had made portrait quilts of family members.

someone also ask about the zentangle quilt, that i have been working on, not completed yet, will post when ever i complete it. this is just a few of my favorites. all my quilt's are my favorite because i hate to part with them.

fun day

yesterday was a fun day, pat and i went to a Zentangle Class. some of you are wondering why i took this class, well there were a few tangles that i just could not figure out how to do. the class was great and lauren persky and chelsea kennedy were great instructors. they make it so easy to understand how to make the tangle pattern. i was a little worried that i might be learning tangles that i already new. but all of the tangles that they taught only one i knew how to make. for you quilter, who are trying to understand why i do this is because one it relaxes me and it has made my blood pressure go down and two i am putting some of my zentangle into my quilting. there are books that show how you can use Zentangle into your quilting. so for those of you that are in the dc and maryland area lauren and chelsea are having another class

here are some pictures of some of the zentangle that lauren and chelsea had as dislay, the second picture are zentangle that we did in the class and the last pictures are some of the zentangle that i did in class and some that i did when i got home.

after the class pat and i brought kits and supplies to keep us doing more zentangle. we also so went to our quilting bee after the zentangle class and showed what we did in class. pat also showed quilts that she had complete and was still working on. i also showed the red and white portrait that i am still working on. Carolyn has found a place to show our red and white quilt at a gallery sometime in early 2012. when i get more info on that i will let you know.

ranting to myself on the RED & WHITE CHALLENGE

hello everyone, i am still having problems with my back. it is a childhood illness that is now giving me problems in my old age. i still cannot sit down at the sewing machine and sew. i took a class a couple weeks ago thinking that i could sew and i could not wait to get out of that class. my back was killing me.

well today i want to talk about the RED & WHITE challenge that a friend is having and it is due by December. i am going crazy. well at first i had decided to make a king size quilt, using a technique that i saw on the Internet. once i started laying the pieces on my designing wall it was totally ugly. no matter how i moved the pieces around it was still ugly. you could not see the design by using just red & white in this quilt. it needed more colors than just red and white. when i showed a friend the pattern they also stated that just two colors was not going to work. so i decided to design a quilt using paper piecing. i was using a flying geese block for my design, the flying geese would swirl all around in different direction. the problem was i could not get the pieces to fit correctly to the attach fabric on the side of the flying geese. so you know what that whole thing got thrown to the side. so with my crazy self i decided to do a portrait quilt. then i decided that was too easy, everyone would be looking for me to make a portrait quilt. so that also got thrown to the side. to top it off i still had a lot of fabric that needed to be used. so i decided to fuse triangles onto white fabric to make it look like flying geese. it didn't come out like i wanted so it will have to do for now, it is not big. since i have problems with my back i cannot use the sewing machine. so with my crazy self i am hand quilting it and my hands are also hurting. so i do a little bit here and little bit there. i am not doing the quilt design that i wanted to machine sew on the quilt. if i was thinking i could of had someone quilt it for me. but i have completed about half of the quilt so far just sewing straight lines. i still have RED & WHITE fabric, so i just made a quilt with red & white blocks and added some red work embroidery to the quilt. now if you remember i stated early about going to a class, well they had a black and white quilt that i thought would look nice in RED & WHITE so i brought the pattern and a crazy ruler that i don't have the slightest idea how to use. the instruction don't make sense to me. so i finally figure out how to cut the pattern, so i get to cutting. guess what that whole idea got thrown to the side also. my pieces kept coming out crooked, points weren't right. NOW TO ALL THE TRADITIONAL QUILTER'S i want to tip my hat to you all. now i know why it was meant for me to do art quilts. paper piecing is not my thing, connecting points and so forth is not for me. i don't have the patients to connect every little piece correct to make just one block, over a thousand piece to put together. my brain will not let me do it. so for now i will just stick to portrait quilting and art quilt. so for right now i have about three RED & WHITE quilts for this quilt challenge. don't be surprise if i make some more RED & WHITE portraits. since i still have some fabric left over. i HATE RED & WHITE, why couldn't we add some black in there i love BLACK. enough on RED & WHITE for now.

oh one more thing. the portrait is not complete. it needs a border and needs to be quilted.

back problem

hello blog family, i have been having some serious back problems and have not been able to quilt. i have been having problems with my back and i tried to not think about it. but one day while i was teaching a class my back started hurting. that next day i could not get up and walk. so i went to urgent care. i have sciatica (?) and they want to do some more test to check out something else. the pain is no joke. when i think i am doing ok, i have a re lap and have to get back in bed. i have been doing some hand sewing on a few things. i made a quilt for a mother who lost her son by a drive by shooting. her son was suppose to have taken my granddaughter to her junior prom. he was my granddaugher's cousin and her best friend. someone asked me to make a quilt for his mother. when my back went out i had to finish it by hand. i am also working on my red and white quilt challenge that is due to be completed by december. i was also working on one that i was beng made by machine sewing that i can not finish because my back is still hurting. so i started another red and white quilt that i am doing by hand. and i loving it. sorry i can not show it until december. my friend pat sent me a get well card and i just love. pat is always thinking about me. she always keep me smiling. now let me tell you what the card said. here goes, "I HEARD YOUR WHATCHAMACALLIT GOT ALL OUT OF WHACK AND DISCOMBOBULATED IT'S A GOOD THING THEY HAVE THOSE THINGAMABOBS TO FIX YOUR DOOHICKEY. IN OTHER WORD, GET WELL SOON." when i read it i had to smile. that's my sistah friend. reading that made the pain less painful for a while.

well blog family i was just letting you know why i have not blogged in a while. i guess i will do some zentangle and some more hand quilting.

Zentangle fabric

yes, i am still zentangle while i am quilting. i have notice that since i have being doing zentangles, my pressure has gone down. it so relaxing. i love doing it. i have a few friends hooked on doing zentangles. but what i have to show you today is what i have done with some of my zentangle pieces. here is a picture of one of my zentangle pieces.

i have scan my zentangle piece to photoshop element and was playing around with it. one day while i was on youtube their was a tutoral on how to manipulate a picture and to print it onto fabric. they mention spoonflower.com a website that will print your download pictures onto fabric. they will also manipulate the picture to change the look if you want to. so i played with my download zentangle on their site and here are the two fabric pieces that i came up with just by using this one zentangle piece. i hope you like the two pieces that i had them print up.

yes these two piece are fabric. this is a yard a piece for both. the print could be smaller or larger it is your choice.

this one is the mirror image.

what i found out is that i need to shade my zentangles very dark with what every color i use.

now i just have to decide what to make out of it, just look at it.

challenge

well i am taking a quick break from quilting right now to blog about the challenge i said, i would do with linda on an earlier post. i am liking what i am coming up with on this challenge. it was fun. i thought it would be hard, but once i got started it just came to me. i hope linda will like it. if she don't, hey, i will keep it. first we had to take a picture and use only solid fabric to make a 15 inch quilt. use a picture that linda let me pick out. the picture is to inspire us to come up with a 15 inch quilt.

check out my process:
sewing pieces together, cutting up shapes and trying to decide where i want the pieces. oh i am also showing the picture that we are to use to inspire us. right now i am quilting the piece and i guess you will have to come back later to see the finale out come. it was due august 1st, and we moved it to the 15th, i think mine will be complete before then.

i hope you enjoyed the pictures i have to get back to quilt this piece for linda.

well, i decided to try bisa butler's technique in portrait quilting by myself. i love it, it is so easy not trying to find skin tone fabric to make a portrait. any kind of fabric will do, so long as you use light to dark fabric to make the portrait. i hope you like it.

The new Quilt Shop Locator app is here and FREE! for more information. i just looked on my phone application and found it. i download it and typed in the state that i live in and i could not believe we had that many quilt shops in maryland. still playing with it, i have not decide if i like it yet, but it doesn't hurt to try something FREE. a friend gave me this little tip for the day.

quilts challenge

my quilt challenge is still with linda and i am just getting started. first let me just say, i must get my fabric organized. i brought some solid fabric a couple of weeks ago and i am just now finding. i call myself putting it somewhere where i could find it quickly. that did not happen. here are my solid colors.

i know what i want to do, i just need to be able to do it in a 15 inch square. i am cutting some strips and sewing them together and then cut them out into two circles and i am still trying to decide what color i want for the background.

birthday treats

my birthday is not until wednesday july 20th, since i have to work on the 20th. my husband and friend's treated me to some nice things early. dinner, friday and saturday night, two books, one on vegetarian cooking and another on how to make juices and smoothies, i just love both of them, don't know which one to look at first. i love smoothies and i have been trying out new cooking dishes when i am not quilting. well sunday a friend treated me to a fabric painting workshop. i had told her that i was planing to take this class and she told be to stop by her house before the class, and she gave me the money for the class. nice gift ,if i must say so, since i didn't have to pay. well blog family the class was great. it was given by kweli, from african american fabrics. her blog is africanamericanfabrics.blogspot.com. she makes and sales her own fabric. check her out, she is having up coming classes. you can also find her on facebook. the class was outside and the weather was great, not to hot. she showed us how to make stencils and stamps, how to use glue to make a stamp, household items. things around the house. kweli, showed us about six different ways on how to design our fabric. all of us in the class made beautiful fabric. i wanted to take all the pieces that everyone made home. they were so pretty.

now the whole time that this lady was working on her piece she kept saying that she didn't like her piece. when she first started i was liking it. now that she completed it she likes it. she could not see how pretty it was until she finished. here is someone else pieces. she use a heart stamp on her piece.

these are two pieces that i made. and yes, i make my own stamps to do my design, the face is from my pouch, that kweli showed us how to do with some foam and a hot air gun.

bisa butler

i took bisa butler's class today, and it was great. her class is college portrait workshop. we all had a great time. linda, from "eatsleepquilt" blog was also in the class. it was about 10 or 12 of us in her class. she showed us how to pick our fabric and cut out the pieces. she told us how to draw our pattern. their were two pictures that we could choose this is the one that i decided on, jill scott.

i am working on the face in this picture. the main piece that i really had to take my time cutting out was the eyes. on the right corner of the mouth, i am trying to get right.

quilt challenge

this is a art painting,that my friend linda over at eat, sleep, quilt blog has asked me to do a quilt challenge with her. this is the painting that we are going to use. she is doing the same challenge with a group of quilter's on another blog. so check out her blog for more details about the challenge. so i said ok. the challenge is to take an art painting and make a quilt using only SOLID COLORS. REPEAT SOLID COLORS. i am thinking ok this is easy. you can change the art work to your interpretation of the art work. but it must be solid colors. my problem is that i only have in my solid stash fabric, is black, red, and a small piece of white.and two or three brown tones, what the heck can a sistah do with that. we are not suppose to buy any fabric, but use what you have. my stash color is ugly, you hear me, ugly. so i am going to take myself to a quilt shop and buy myself some solid fabric. now if this challenge was about using prints, african fabric, batiks anything but solids, i would not have to go to a quilt shop. solid fabric is not really my thing. now if it is batik, solid black, know problem. hey, a sistah like me will buy the whole bulk of michael miller black. black is my favorite choice of fabric. so just to let you know there will be some black in this piece. and the challenge is due the first of august. i will post how it is coming along until the first of august when i will give it to linda.

thank you all for your comments, i do read them. sherise, i do have marilyn belford book and i do use her technique. my problem is this technique takes longer to do vs the other technique that i do. i just have to realize if i want it to be right i just have to take my time. whether i can finish it in a couple of hours or a couple of day. i just want it to look right. now for the person who left a comment and know my creative history. why aren't you telling me who you truly are. i have a idea who you are call me. i use to crochet and knit hats with people name or crazy design on them with funny shapes. a few local well know singers would request hats from me. i would also go into stores look at a sweater, go home and make that same sweater. that is another time another day. quilting is my passion now. i truly started have problems with my hands.

community day went great, no rain. the motown quilt challenge was fun. i could only name a few of the song and some of them i just didn't know what the name of the song. my motown song quilt was "tears of a clown". and it tied for first place for the peoples choice award. we also gave two movie ticket to the person who could guess the name of the song to the quilts. out of 16 motown quilts, two people got 11 songs right. we also hung other quilts other than the motown quilts.

here are a few picture of that day. tears of a clown, wee bee quilters, (i am the one holding quilt), my newest piece as of now. and my t-shirt quilt. i had 12 pieces hanging up that day.

computer problems and been busy

i am back, i have been very busy. and have been having computer problems. i have been working on a couple of quilts to send to some children in africa. no pictures because pictures were lost. i have finally finished a quilt that i am working on that will be on display for community day at michigan park rec center on june 18th. the quilt theme is motown. we are to make a quilt base on a motown song. i can not wait to see what everyone else has made. sorry folks, i can't show this quilt until after june 18th. i am also working on a red and white quilt challenge and that is driving me crazy. i have tried several time to come up with an idea for a red and white quilt. this red and white is not my favorite color. this is due in december. so i still have time to come up with something. i am still doing zentangle and here is a picture of my zentangle quilt. i plan to finish this by next week. i came in first place to call bingo on a zentangle group site. two other women also won. i am suppose to get the super prize it is suppose to be deliver next we. it will be zentangle items.

harder and harder

for some reason these portrait are getting harder and harder for me to do. i have to look at the picture for hours, before i can work on it. i still have problems with the skin tones. i am using photoshop element to break down the picture. there are people who are just tracing the picture and getting the same results. that is the way i want to do my portrait. instead of playing with the computer to get what i want. i just order a book by aniko feher who makes portrait quilts. i hope this book will help me out, because i don't like the fact that it takes me days to get one portrait made. the other techique only took me a couple of hours to do.the prince portrait took me two months to do. i don't like working on things to long, i get bore and throw it in the corner somewhere.

ZENTANGLE

about a couple of years ago i tried my hands at doodling on fabric. i always doodle on paper. now i am finding out that they call this technique ZENTANGLE. i love doing this. it is so relaxing. right now i am trying to make a collection of these and i plan to transfer these drawing onto fabric blocks. if only i had kept the one i did long time ago. i would tangle and then throw them away. i am now keeping them in a journal. if you recall i did an zentangle of a lady on fabric about a year ago. i have been trying to figure out what to do with her. so i decided to do a few zentangles and add it to the quilt.the first zentangle is a challenge piece call mooka. i am in a zentangle challenge of the week on another blog. so check out what i have done so far and i hope you like it.

red and white exhabit

well, i went to ny to see the red and white quilt exhibit. i was just blown away. about 20 quilters, rented a charted bus to take us to the exhibit. we also stopped at the city quilters quilt shop. it was a cold day, but a great day seeing the quilts. the reason why some of us went was because we wanted to see the quilts to give us an idea on what we can make for the red and white challenge that we are in. although all of these quilts are solid red and white, some of us, that are in the challenge will be using polka dots, stripe anything that is red and white. i can not wait to see what we come up with. we have until december to complete our quilts. we are going to try to find a place to display our quilts in december. i have tried twice on working with these two colors and it is hard for me. i am not use to working with just two color and it is not a portrait. wish me luck that i come up with something.

out with the old and in the new

my first very large quilt was a guilt that i made for my bed. and it was my first appliqued quilt with the paper in the inside. i had to cut little holes to take out the paper. applique has come along way for me, no more paper, thank god. that quilt has proteted me and kept me warm. when i made this quilt i did not know what the heck i was doing. i had no pattern, just a picture and i was making changes to that. during the time that i was making this quilt i thought about my grandmother. how i would watch her make a quilt, with her friends. but i realize that none of them were teaching any of their children, or grandchildren how to quilt. i always felt a closness to my grandmother. she was seen as the mother in her community, people would come to her for advise. so as i worked on this quilt, i remember feeling like she was quilding me in how to make this quilt. her spirit was telling me what to do and to who to go to if i didn't know how to do something when i was working on this quilt. i always thought that quilt shops sold only quilts and not fabric. i never took a class for quilting. i read a few books, but i was the type of person that can look at something and go home and make. i would always do that when i saw a sweater that i like. i would look at that sweater and go home and make it. and that is what i did with this quilt.
now that i have been quilting for several years and my daugther does not have a interest in quilting, i have notice that my granddaughter seem to be interested in alot of things that i do. a couple of years ago i taught her how to hand quilt. and that seem to be to slow for her and my patience with her was very shot. but as soon as i showed her what to do on a sewing machine she was hooked. now that she is 14, a couple of months ago she has joined our jr quilters at the guild that i go to. she just turned 14 on the 15th a couple of days ago, and i was thinking about giving her one of my sewing machines. her little brothers are still running in and out of her room and i just don't feel it is safe right now for her to have a sewing machine at her home right now. i will just keep it here for now.

the title for this post is call out with the old and in with the new. the quilt that i have been writing about is old and has been laid to rest. not thrown away. it is somewhere in a box, somewhere in this house.

working hard

well i have been working hard with personal matter and quilting at the same time. working on several things, but today i am going to talk about doll making. oh before i get started, let me say this, no i do not dye my own fabric. that is something that i am very afraid to do. i do use dye fabric or batik fabric to make my portrait quilts. someone asked this in one of my comments. and i did save your site, for just the day when i decide to dye fabric. now back to talking about doll making. someone likes my dolls so well that they want me to teach a class. i told them that i am just learning this myself and she still wants me to teach a class. the doll on the right is what i am going to teach how to make. she gave me a time frame for the class and i really don't think that was enough time. so what i always do is teach a class for the first time is, i teach it at the quilting bee that i am in first. i wouldn't be able teach the class at the bee until maybe in a couple of months and she needs to know now how long it would take to teach this class. so today linda from EATSLEEPQUILT BLOG and my quilting friend jackie came over and they were my student for the day. by doing this it helps me to see what i need to do different and how to write my lesson plan and handout paper. the first thing is that on my supply list, i need to put a picture of what a open toe applique presser foot looks like. the attachment foot that i feel is best to use. this is not a good picture of the foot. you must be able to see the sewing line that you are sewing on.

they both realize that doll making is very time consuming. we started about 1:15 and was still at it at 5:00 and was not nearly finish. i could not truly give a time frame, base on how i work when i sew. when i work on a something, i will sew for a while take a break, do something else and come back and start where i left off. and there are someday i just sew nostop. by me sewing all day and night and taking breaks would not give a true timing for a workshop. they only took a very short break and that really wasn't a break because they were drink and eating while they were sewing.

day two they realize the hard part is really working with the hands. turning those tiny fingers is very hard. but they worked at it. jackie sitting comfortable working and turning those tiny finger inside out.

jackie is holding the dolls so you can see them before the legs are attached. next they are going to add the legs to the body. now if any body can tell me if there are any strong doll needles that will sew straight through the hips and body with out the needle moving to the side, please let me know. it hate it when it curves to the side and point somewhere other than where you want it to come out.

here is a picture of linda's and jackie's dolls. my doll is the one in the middle. the lady's are going to take home their dolls and put the arms on and add clothes to the dolls. let's see who is going to be finish first. also check out their cute little head wraps. that is real hair. the person who maintain my locs give me locs that people don't want when she cut their locs.

well for the last two days we have been work hard making dolls and i still have to write down how i am going to teach this class. they both agree that i should not teach how to put the pipe cleaner into the hands. it takes long and is very hard to do. the hands and face should be a separte class.

first i want to thank everyone for their lovely comment about the dolls. the dolls that have the arms and leg made out of coat hanger, that is not my original design. someone that i know made one and i just tried making it myself. now the other dolls are from a book call, cloth doll artistry. the clothes are my own design. i am still working on perfecting this. i need to work on the hands, legs. and mostly try making faces for these dolls.

now someone also asked about the scarves that i helped my niece make. the scarf is my nieces design. their is no pattern. and the direction that you asked about are right. enough said about that and i am not helping her anymore.

ok, i am back, at it and it is because i was surround by my quilting sistah's at guild meeting this weekend. i gusess by just getting a break from home and work and not think about my personal life for a few hours just got my creative mojo working. i even took my granddaughter with me and she had a great time and by the end of the guild meeting she was asking if she could join. we have young girls under14 as members.
so when i got home i started working on the PRINCE piece. for the past two months i have mess up fabric trying to do other people. i dropped out of a challenge because i could not do the person that i was trying to do. my mind was somewhere else. but now i am back so let me show you what i have been doing,

2.working around the eyes and around the frame of the face.

3. added the eyes, lips and hair.

4, add his symbol and back ground fabric. i have not decided as to how i am going to quilt this and whether or not i am going to add a border. i am going to think on this for a while.

dolls

i haven't been quilting for about two months. it is not like i haven't tried, for some reason i just keep messing up fabric. so i decided my hands into making dolls and i like it. quilting is still my first love, but for some reason my creative flow in not into my quilts. life is kind of crazy right now for me. my personal life still have somethings that need solving and that should be cleared up by the end of the month. so check out my dolls and i hope you like it.

the first three dolls, arms and legs were made from coat hanger's. the other dolls were made by following a book and i added my little changes to it. i am not good at making their cloths. this will be something that i will have to work on. oh i forgot, the hair is real dreadlocks. and no they are not my locs. the hair was give to me by my locitian.

busy life

for those of you that are waiting for me to finish projects for them, i am sorry but i have a family emergency and some of my projects are behind. i have been sick, but i also have a family member that is ill and need my attention right now. going back and forth to doctors and going to work kinds of drains me and make me tire. so i find myself messing up quilt pieces. here is a piece that i have been working on for a month. i had to do this piece over about three times. most of the time i and make this in a couple of hours. my creative energy was just not there. but i finally got it as close as i could. the person is picking this up this weekend. i am also trying to make xmas gifts and i am also messing those up also. here is a picture of the couple that i did. i hope they like it.

WHY DID I VOLUNTEER

I volunteer to help my niece make these lovely scarfs and i am dreaming about these these. she is going to be selling these at Sister's Only event in dc at the convention center this Saturday November 6. making these have taken all my time to the point where i have not done any quilting. i love my niece, but right now my shoulders are starting to hurt and i have not finish this second pile that she has given me. and to top it off i have started knitting again, just because i don't have any hand work to do. i brought this cute little headband that can keep your ears warm and you can also wear it to keep your neck warm also. i decided that i could make some more instead of buying a hand full of them. i am working on this while i ride to and from work on the bus. it takes my mind off all those scarves that i have to make when i get home. i found a free pattern on the Internet. it didn't have a flower on the side like the one i brought. i will add the flower to it. i will be glad when saturday is over so that i can get back to my quilting. i have a lot to do. i have a few challenge quilts that i need to complete. i will keep my mouth shut about helping someone with something like this. it is a whole lot different from quilting. quilting relaxes me, but doing this is just a lot a stress on me. saturday please hurry up and get here.

the skirt

LOL when i saw carol's coment in the last post, i had to LOL. girl i started to post a picture of the skirt. i was just to lazy to take a picture. one reason i didn't post the clothes because i thought people would rather see quilts. someone else also ask me why i didn't show the skirt. the pattern is call "stella strip skirt" no. 103, by serendipity studio. their web address is SewSerendipity.com. i made the skirt long. the pattern looked hard to me, but it was quite easy. so here it is and also a picture the top that i made that is to big.

busy, busy bee

i have been busy. for some reason i have been making clothes. just because i quilt people think that i can make clothes. if you need a buttonhold or a zipper put in you are out of luck. a friend came by and wanted me to paint a design on a outfit of hers because she felt that it was to plan looking. i gave her the paint and showed her how to do it. i was not going to mess up her outfit. it was a mess, but lucky enough we were about to wash it out. in the meantime she decided to buy some small pieces that i had hanging on the wall to sew on the back of her jacket. after we got her jacket looking good, i was like why didn't i think of doing that. the next day i was using some ugly fabric that i brought from a ugly fabric auction that wasn't cotton am made me a outfit using black fabric and mudcloth. i plan to add some shells onto the outfit. the outfit is to big and it will be taken in some. i didn't use a pattern. i also made a pleated skirt from the jello roll strips. the pattern was from a quilt show that i went to. i was scared to death of making it, i am not good at following pattern direction. it came out pretty nice.

now as far as the quilting goes, i had made a comment on a quilting site that i was bored and didn't have anything to quilt. you know what happen, friends ask me to make them a portrait quilt. now i have three pieces that need to be completed by november. and racheal clark, a quilter from California also asked me to make some portraits of her grandchildren. i don't do commission quilts. but this time i am making these because i am bored. i don't like for people to wait for me to finish something. if i am in the mood to make something i will, but if i am not in the mood it is know telling when a person will get something from me.
i have been trying to do the portraits with the different colors and i have been having problems with the skin tone. i didn't like the pieces that i made. i am still working on that.

so here is a portrait of a friend's mother, for her mother's birthday that is next month. my friend tried to make it herself and couldn't make. when she comes into town i am going to take time to show her how to make these.

i have not quilted it yet but i will be finish by november.

the Bob Marley quilt was used by using the "PHOTO-INSPIRED ART QUILTS: From Composition to finished Piece", book. i took a class from Bisa Butler at a retreat several months ago on this same technique but using different types of fabric to give it a different look. i just needed the book to give me a little more understanding of what i was doing. the other technique i use is by Maria Elkins, she has a DVD that she is selling to teach her technique. you can find her on the Internet.

the Bob Marley is a picture from a t-shirt. my old t-shirt has bob marley with a black background. but i saw this one in a store and took a picture of it with my phone and enlarge the picture.

someone asked what type of fusible web i was using and i am still trying to find the right one for me. i like to use ulltra heat n bond because it give me a sharp smooth cut. but what i don't like about it is, that it makes the quilt very stiff from the fabric layers that i use. steam n seam give me the feel i want but not the sharpness. so i am still playing with that. so i hope that i answered every ones questions. i am a work, still sick and can't wait until lunch timesoi can take a nap. friday i am taking the day off and going to my cousin's beach house and i hope i can get some rest there.

bob marley

that's right i am working on a bob marley piece. at first i started to trace the picture to get my pattern that i wanted to work on. but i change my mind and cut directly from the picture. so i had to print a couple copies of the picture. the fabric was fused and the fabric was temporaryly adhesive to the picture. i cut out the different shades of the picture. all most just like the other technique that i do. i posterize the picture, and i did not grayscale the picture. i left the picture just as it is and posterize it in color and just cut out the different shades.

i use a light box to help me lay the pieces in it right place by having a picture on top of the light box. here is what i have done so far.

after i start working on this piece, i realise that this one is going to be a hard one to work on. there are a lot of tiny little pieces that i could not cut out the way i wanted to. i don;t like the out come of her mouth or eyes. i am going to try the other technique where i will use a verity of colors. the quilting of this piece was very easy to use this time sense i you steam -n- seam 2 lite. i like heat n bond, it gives a sharper cut with the fabric. it doesn't fray as much when i use heat n bond. the problem with heat n bond is that it is a little harder to quilt with the heat n bond. right now i am using the steam n seam. so here is my final result of this quilt. i hope you like it, because i don't.

i join, i took the pledge, this is a group of quilters who pledge to show the progress of their quilts on their blog. i pledge to show from start to finish of making my quilts. now this is going to be hard for me because i like to just show you my finish product. trying to explain is going to be the hard part ,so i hope i can explain clearly so that everyone understand.

so right now i am going to show the quilt that i was working on with the new technique that i was teaching myself from a book. here is the finish product of the quilt that was in the book. i like this one better that the one of my cousin with the big hat. i hope you like it.

now that i made this pledge i will explain what i am now working on. a friend wants me to make a portrait quilt of her sister. i usually make the portrait quilt no large than 8" x 11" or 11" x 15". but once i got the original picture the way i want it on the computer, i realize that i did not want to make this into a small quilt. i didn't think that i would get a good result if i did it small. i believe that this portrait will be about 17" x 22". i hope i can do this and i hope she will like it. i blew the picture up by tiling the pictures into 4 pieces and taping them together. my printer will not do tiling and and i don't know how to tile a picture on photoshop element. so here is a picture of the four pieces taped together. i use to outline the different gray scales, but since i have done so many of these i don't have to outline the grayscaling any more. this picture is just grayscale to number 2 level. not like some of other portraits that were level 4 grayscale. i have not decided what color i am going to make this portrait. check back next week and i will show you what i have done and also about the cookout at my house for the quilting bee that i am in. here is the picture that i am working on.

ok, here is the new portrait technique that i am trying out. it wasn't to hard to do, but i need more practice. this is not going to beating me. i didn't do the one that was in the book that i was using. but now i am going to go back and do the picture that is in the book and see how i do. i am working on a quilt for my bed and i am doing it all by hand. now you know that is not me but i need a quilt for my bed and i am not going to buy one. so wish me luck. i will show that one later. i am trying to decide if i am going to machine quilt it or hand quilt it.

taking a class trying new things

i did this piece several weeks ago. it is suppose to be my younger cousin. it is alright but i don't like the way i did his mouth. i will try another one later. i am taking a basic quilting class for machine quilting. my friends are asking me why am i taking this class. they feel that i don't need to take this class. all of the portraits that i have made, the quilting is either straight down, across or to the side.
now don't laugh at me, because my friends were, because i told them that i have learned how to stitch in the ditch. i am not lying, i did not know what that was. i want to learn how to do fancy quilting. all i can do is stippling and circles and lines. i know i have a long way to go. i am scared to death to do the feather stitch. they were asking why is the quilting college student going back to quilting 101. if you really want to know i never took a quilting. i just did my own thing until i started to the portrais. the instructor was also talking about squaring your quilt and what kind of batting to use. i nver sqared my quilt, i can say i am using the right kind of batting. class is tomorrow and i can't wait.
i am also trying to teach myself another technique in portrait quilting. now this one is going to take sometime for me to get this technique down to my liking. that is why i am not showing any pictures for this technique. i really need to find a color viewer to help me to pick out the fabric for this technique. because i keep messing up. by me using my own eyes to distinguish the difference in skin tone colors. i have faith that i going to do this. so once i get this, i will show pictures later.

rhythm

the challenge word is RHYTHM. rhythm to me is hearing the beat to music. music is the rhythm. if you don't hear the beat there is no rhythm and there is no music. i love to just close my eyes and listen to the sound of music. whether the rhythm is coming from a horn, drum, piano, a heart beat, a clock, everything has a rhythm.. the rhythm is here if you just listen.

i have been so busy for the last couple of weeks. i have been making portrait quilts for our family reunion, that was just this weekend. i had a great time and everyone that got a portrait loved it. i think i made about 4 or 5 of them. i am one of the historian in the family so i was working hard in getting information on the family tree and find pictures of family members, so i used some of those pictures to make the portrait quilts. i also had a demand of making portrait of father's for father's day. the reunion was in charlotte north carolina. before i left to go to the reunion a friend told me i she try to stop and go to MARY JO'S FABRIC SHOP while i was in charlotte. well lady's i did and i went crazy. it look like a big old warehouse full of fabric. i spent money that i should have been using for something else. the fabric shop is in gaston(?) north carolina not to far from charlotte north carolina. i am going to try to get back down there by the end of the year. i brought fabric to make more portraits.

i was going to post pictures of the portraits that i made and some how the pictures are deleted, also some of the family reunion pictures. i don't know what i did, but they are gone. the two pictures that i am showing is my little niece and a portrait of me. those are the only two that got downloaded. the other portrait is also me. that was the very first portrait that i made when i started doing portraits. i have always hated my first self portrait of myself. i like the pink one better. if i can find the picture on my laptop i will post them when i can.

i found a photo several months ago that i really wanted to try and make and this is it. i got permission from the photographer to use his photo. i feel that i could have done better. i don't like the face. my favorite is still lawrence fishburne and whoopi goldberg. this picture is 17" x 22". i enjoyed this challenge for myself. i don't care about trying to do 100 portraits any more. my challenge is to just challenge myself to do more and better. i know as i do more there are going to me times when i am going to ask myself which one do i like best. first, it was my grandson, toni morrison, whoopi goldberg, michael jackson, lawrence fishburne and now this one. but i must tell you my favorite is still lawrence fishburne. so enjoy.

someone asked if i was having withdrawals without having a sewing machine. i would say h--- yes. i rearrange my sewing room twice and it is still junky. the more i moved stuff the junkier the room got. i think my husband and son brought the sewing machine for me because they were afraid i was going have them move furniture around in the house. i was move stuff when they weren't home. my husband was afraid that i would hurt myself. i looked at those portraits hang on my wall for weeks without being quilted. i was buying fabric and still didn't know what to do it. this is how i got the new sewing machine. i took hubby with me when i was buying fabric, most of the time he would sit in the car and wait. but one day while i was buying fabric, my husband came in the shop and was looking at some of the sewing machine. when we were leaving the shop i asked if he was going to buy one.(joking with him) so a couple days later after i had moved furniture around in the house, moved plants, washed all the cloths and i was just sitting think of what to do next, he asked what was wrong and i told him that i needed a sewing machine. he said go get one. i was going to take a loan to get one but my husband and son brought one for me. he told me that i was not going to drive him crazy. and guess what i still have not gotten my Kenmore or jenome back. they call and said that the person who repair the sewing machine is out. so i am just waiting.

ok, i forgot to tell you that my old faithful Kenmore die on me at the quilting retreat. and a friend let me use their babylock. so for a whole month i have not had a sewing machine to use. just to let you know i have three sewing machines. the Jerome died before i went on the retreat and the embroidery machine, well let's just say that i am scared to death of it. and yes, it is just sitting there looking at me. so now both of the machines are in the shop. i just love my old Kenmore. why oh why did she die on me at a time when i needed her. but guess what i got a babylock quest plus for mother's day. my husband and son brought it for me. i was playing with it yesterday and having a ball. during the whole month that i didn't have a sewing machine to use, i did three more portraits, finish the top of one the quilts that i did at the retreat. and did a little hand quilting. i haven't hand appliqued in two years and i realize you really have to take time in doing this. one of the portrait's i did i didn't like the outcome of it, so i will be doing that one over. and the other two came out nice . i really like the one of my daughter and her husband. i want to do one of my aunt to give to her at out family reunion next month, but no one has sent me a picture of her yet.
i have a pictures that i have in mind to do, but i need permission from the photographer to use his picture. i am hoping that he give me permission. it is a picture of a nude black man. (all in good taste) and i also want to do fabric portrait of black men. that will be my next series of portrait to reach my gold of doing a hundred portraits. i will be taking alot of pictures at the reunion and pictures of men in general, men that i know. wish me luck.

we had so much fun, the three quilt pictures are pictures of the quilts by some of the instructors that taught them. i took all three of these classes. i haven't completed any of them yet. will post those at a later date. their were many other class i wish i had taken. the person in the rollers was our hostess for the pajama party. everyone was so crazy and we had to parade on the little stage to show off our pajama's. it was fun, my friend felicia won for the most craziest person parading across the stage. you miss a show from her. i won for the first person registering for the retreat second year in a row. we had fat quarter swaps. i have some nice pieces from the swap. my friend charlene and sandy won the block challenge. there was show -n- tell every night. there were so many talented people their. there was a ugly fabric auction and i believe they made over about $800 dollars that will be donated to cancer research..

i met old friends and made new friends. the reason that i am say this is because quilters are the best. one day while we were there we were ask to go to someone that we didn't know and introduce yourself to them and talk and then turn them around and rub their shoulders and say "I GOT YOUR BACK!". and they are to turn and do the same thing to you. the next day in class i sat next to someone that i didn't know and i got a call from home and i had an emergency, and i start to cry. i said i need a hug and this stranger gave me a hug and then she rub my shoulder and told me that she had my back. she stay with me until i found out that everything was OK at home. the sistah had my back. and i am grateful for her. during the rest of my stay when we saw each other we would greet each other and say I GOT YOUR BACK. know matter where i go and i am around quilters there is always an act if kindness.

i have been busy quilting and busy with my personal life. personal life has been crazy for a while but things are back in order. but i have been doing a lot of quilting and forgetting to take pictures. a few friends have been asking me to make portrait of their family members. i have been making a lot of portrait quilts for birthday presents. but i kept forgetting to take pictures of my work. now i did take picture of the last three pieces that i did. i am loving this lawrence fishburne quilt. the gray scale for this picture is four, but you are looking at three. i think i am going to check out the gray scale in three. the other two are pictures of my nephew and my best friend. i hope you like what i did.

i am also trying to get things ready for the quilting retreat that i am going to next week. picking out fabric for this retreat is driving me crazy. i brought fabric for the retreat, but now i am also looking at fabric in my stash. so looking back, i really didn't need to buy fabric. don't tell my husband. let this be our little secret. i am taking all day class for the three days that we are staying. two of the classes are techniques of how to make portrait quilts. these two classes are full and i am going to get all that i can from these classes. i just got a email today about another retreat that a friend is giving for next year. she want to know if i am coming. i taught at her retreat last year, it was fun. i guess i will have to plain on going to that next year. i know that i am going to have fun next week i can't wait. i will take lots of pictures.

i deleted the last post because of a nasty comment that was posted in the comments.. it wasn't even related to quilting. it was a very nasty advertisement. i didn't know how to delete just that comment so i deleted the entire post sorry about that. i feel that no one needs to see that filth.

the post was a picture of my challenge quilt. i have been kind of busy and i have not taken any pictures of what i have been doing. and the bad thing is that all the pieces that i have been working on, i have either sold or gave as gifts. i have to remember to take pictures. if someone can tell me how to just delete one comment and not the entire post , i would appreciate it.

puzzle

i am doing a challenge quilt and the challenge word is PUZZLE. while working on my puzzle piece i realize that my other projects that i am working on is a puzzle. quilt making is a puzzle. you are putting the pieces together like a puzzle to make a quilt. i can not show my challenge piece yet and it looks nothing like this one. am showing this one because i am still working on my portrait series. i am trying to make a 100 portraits and so far i am on number 48. working on these pieces are like putting a puzzle together. the funny thing is that i have alway love putting puzzles together. guess that is why i like to make these faces. i am putting these pieces together just so that i can see how they are going to look in the end. just like when i am putting a puzzle together. i love doing the mystery puzzle and solving the mystery. CHECK ME OUT NEXT WEEK WHEN I WILL SHOW MY CHALLENGE QUILT. it has nothing to do with this piece, it is very very simple.

in the blizzard of 2010

in the dc area we have been snowed in for 4 day and they are talking about more snow tomorrow. so i have been making faces, louis armstrong, billie holiday, etta james and nat king cole. i am trying to make a series of jazz and blues personalities. i am running out of fusible web so i guess i have to find something else to do while i am snowed in. i never thought that i would get tire of looking at tv, but i am. i might try and see how this will work out if i try to use fabric glue. wish me luck. i love louis armstrong and nat king cole, but i don't like the look of etta's face on the left side and i should have used a older picture of billie, because if it wasn't for the flower i don't know if anyone would know who she was. i think i do men portrait better than the woman portrait. i just need to take it a little slower for now on when i am making these.

i have been working on other things before the snow. my quilt challenge piece is finished, the challenge word is PUZZLE, sorry i can not show it until the end of the month. this month is heart disease month and i made a quilt for my job to hang up in the office. they did a little something in the office friday for heart disease month and i was not their because i had to go to the doctor because, guess what i am having problems with my heart. enough said about that. and i was asked to teach the portrait technique and i am trying to figure out how i can teach this. it's easy but students would need a computer and a printer. i am going to figure out how to teach this.

this piece is for my niece brea, i hope she likes it. you know how teenagers are. i am going to tell her to look at this and tell me if she likes it. she saw the other michael jackson piece that i made and she likes it. the problem is i can not find the picture that i used. i did not save it on my laptop. her birthday is in february and she is a big michael jackson fan. if she does not care for this one i will give this one to my grandson and she can find a picture for me and i will make that. brea brea happy early birthday. just let me know what you want. i here you are now listening to maxwell.

all i can say is that i am having fun making these. so i guess there will be more to come. i will have to say that i like making people, animals are ok, but i find it a little harder to do animals. i realize that it is hard to do animal that have whiskers. the zebra was real hard to do. the pieces were very tiny. i should have enlarge the picture and maybe it would not have been so hard to do. my gold is to see how many i can do and to try to also do a whole person not just the face. which me luck.

everyone that got a portrait quilt from me, loved them. i have made at least about 20 of them. i had a few people wanting the portrait of my grandmother, when i had only made two of her. everyone said that the quilt pieces look just like the person that it was suppose to be. my three favorites of my my family were my grandmother, father and my young cousin. i also made mya angelou, halle berry, prince, obama, michael jackson, gandhi, whoopi, michele obama, toni morrison, martin luther king, and tina turner. i love all of them except for hallie berry and mya angelou. i didn't get their faces like i wanted them to be. check it out.

here are five more that i have been working on. i have about two or three more to make. these will be gifts that i will be giving out. if i can get a picture of my aunts dog i will try to do a animal, wish me luck. i still have a little problem picking out shades of colors. messed up a couple of time and had to start over. i still have not been able to do my husband yet, because he has a goatee and i can not figure out how to do the facial hair on his face. i will get it soon or later. i also have to finish my challenge quilt and alter fabric swap by the 19th. i hope you like what i have done so far.

yes this is me and i am loving it. i have always want to try this and once i purchase adobe element 8, this was the first thing that i tried. and i love it. i am working on doing some more and my next challenge for 2010 is to do flowers.

i am taking two class at a retreat in 2010 that will be teaching how to do portrait quilts. what ever they teach me i am willing and ready. i want to learn all the little short cut or anythings to improve what i am doing now. i was afraid to do my hair, since i have dreadlock and i could not figure out how to do the hair. i still have not gotten the quilting of the face the way i want it. and i am still trying to figure out how to stop the invisible thread from breaking. i still have alot to learn about portrait quilts. so right now it is try and error. so let me get back to trying to do another one since it is snowing in maryland and i am in the house and have time to sew.

So many projects

so many projects and so many mix review. for the month of december i have two or three projects due. i am in a xmas stocking gift swap and i am having a hard time figuring out what to give to 18 quilting friends. when i really don't have any money. so i am buying gifts and making gifts. the next
project is a fabric altered page swap. i am making two set of 14 page swap. the pages that i am making are coming out really nice. i have seen a few of the other pages that some of my friends have made and the swap should turn up some really nice pages. the last project is a purple challenge quilt that is being challenge by the quild that i am in. this project is where the mix reviews come in. i used purple scraps that i had, ribbon, and beads to make this quilt. i have some friends and family who don't like it because they don't understand it. they say that this is not my style. my granddaughter is one the people who love it. and want to put it in her room. i call it purple rain. for my personal opinion, i love it and enjoyed making it. because this is a abstract piece and this is something that i don't do, people ask who made it. right now i don't care if anyone likes it or not. my granddaughter likes it and she has never asked for a quilt from me. so this will be her xmas present, plus a camera from me. here is a picture of the uncompleted quilt. i still have to finish the binding and finish adding

beads. this is not a good picture, you can not see the quilting in this picture and that is what make this quilt so different. the quilting is beautiful. that is what makes this quilt.

mud cloth class

i took a mud cloth class today and it was great. we actually used mud to design our pieces. i appreciate mud cloth more, since i know the process of making mud cloth. you are using the mud to paint your design onto the cloth. the instructor used mud from all over the world, my two favorite colors were red and black from maryland. you would paint, dry, rinse and them repeat this about three more times. the more you repeat this the darker your colors will look after they are dried.

the first picture is from one of the student in the class, the next picture is from the instructor, the third picture is my piece unfinished and the others are some of the other students in the class. it was a nice workshop. am going to start collecting dirt now. the dirt has sit in the water for a year for the best result for color, but can be used earlier.

don't pay to be cheap

yes i am telling you not to be cheap. i have made several sweatshirt jackets in different styles and decided to make a jacket for my mother. but this time i did not pay 15 dollars or more on this sweatshirt. me trying to be cheap paid 4 dollars for a x-large sweatshirt, and guess what, i haven't even finish it and it is too small, around the shoulder and the arm area. now i did say i have made several jackets out of sweatshirts and this is the first time that a jacket is to small. i got this sweatshirt in the men's section at the dollar store. i have learn my lesson and won't be cheap again. now i will have to find this brown fabric strips, i think it was a hoffman brand call cappuccino, i got it at quilt show. i hope i can find it at a quilt shop close by. these are the colors that my mother like. i don't even want to finish this jacket. so don't be cheap like i did. just a little tip from me.

my doodling art

last week at work, after i had finished my work, i started doodling on some paper. i realized that it was looking nice. so i thought maybe i could do this on fabric. i photo copy the picture onto photo fabric but the picture was not sharp. so i doodle the picture onto fabric. first i had to try different ink pens to see which pen would not bleed through the fabric. canvas fabric seem to work but i didn't like the fact that the fabric is not smooth looking. so i doodled onto a roll of photo fabric. and it worked ok, but now i have to buy some more photo fabric on a roll and no one seem to carry photo fabric on a roll around here any more. so it looks like i will have to order the roll of fabric. i kind of like doing this so i also did some adinka symbols. now i am try to decide how i am going to quilt this or add some kind of boarder to what i have done so far. i cut the lady out and fuse the lady onto black fabric.

another UFO completed

here is another UFO that i have completed. what i had was some red work patterns that i got from a quilt flea market. i did the pieces with black thread instead of red and didn't know what to do with them. and a couple of weeks ago i had some of my sistah quilter friends over for a cook out and i showed them another unfinish african red work piece i had been working on and was thinking about teaching it at the retreat we had in april. everyone said i should have taught it at the retreat. i didn't think anyone what to do any hand work at the retreat, so i taught thread painting. but now i find out that i was wrong. after listening to them i decide to find my other pieces and complete the quilt and this is what i have. it is call MOTHERLAND.

PASSION

yesterday i went to a lecture to see faith ringgold, http://www.faithringgold.com/ a quilt artist. her work is just beautiful. listening to her made me realize that i was not wrong about how i feel about my quilting. i do not miss one day without working on a quilt. she stated that she has to feel the quilt; she has to have that passion to make it. if i don't have that passion in me, i can't make it. when i had a year to make the slave quilt, that quilt was not in me to make. i did not feel the passion or see a view of how to go about making this quilt. the passion and idea on how to make this quilt did not come to me until four months before it was due. i could see and feel what needed to be done to make this quilt. others had confidence in me and knew that i could make this quilt. but i did not have that passion and confidence to do it. i am the type of person who once have an idea for a quilt and that passion is their, i can complete that quilt in a day or two or less than three weeks. when i made blood on your hands, about the girls kilt by the hands of their mother their was truly a passion in me to make that piece. if it is more than a month, i loss the passion to completing it. but there are times when i will completely stop working on a piece and stare at it for days and try to figure out what is missing and how can i make it better. once i figure out what is missing the passion is even more there for me to get it just the way i want it. and it gets completed. i love quilting so much that a lot of my idea doesn't get made because my passion on how to make something has not come into vision for me. there are quilts out there that i want to make but i just don't know how to make them the way i invision them.

PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE

i finally finished my people are people quilt. i was trying to do the wording by machine and it was really looking crazy. so i did the wording by hand. i truly believe that people are people no matter what color they are. this piece was fun making and i have a few friends who want me to make patterns for them. all i have to do is print the pictures that i drew and explain how i did the people. i don't do eyes, nose or mouth i am not that good at drawing. i would love to learn how to draw more realistic pictures.

here is some good news, a friend sent me a email telling me that roland freeman (author of A Communion of Spirts: African-American Quilter, Preservers, and their stories) was looking for people who made Obama quilt. the congressional black caucus and the mayor's office of dc have asked that the Obama exhitition be extened to the end of september. the show should have ended in july. some of the quilters were not willing to extend their loaner aggreement for another month. and he was looking for about five more quilts to display. so i call and both of my Obama quilts are now in the exhibit. their is one thing i can say about quilters, we do look out for each other.

do you remember these two pieces. of all things i don't think these are my best pieces.

i am working on a piece call people are people. i will show the completed piece in a couple of days. i came about making this piece because as i was growing up, i was seeing how people were treating people just because they were different. because of the color of their skin, because they are gay, disable, or their beliefs are different from theirs. some of these feels are still among us. people still hating. but then their are people who just see people as people and that is what i try to see in people. i try not to judge, but it is hard when you see things that you know are not right out here in this world. people are people know matter what color or who they are.

twisted sister thread painting challenge

well i had to get a new laptop. the old laptop crashed again. so while i didn't have a computer for a couple of weeks, this is what i have been doing. i made a quilt for my niece. a quilt pattern call twisted sister. i am not good at following patterns but this came out pretty good. and i used a long arm quilting machine to do the quilting. and i loved it, i can not wait to make a larger quilts to quilt on the long arm machine.

i also completed the thread painting mask, i was working on. i had fun doing that. during this time i also practice doing machine quilting stitches. like the feather stitch on a quilt, which i am still have problems try to get perfect. i want to practice quilting patterns so that when i work on the long arm, i will feel comfortable working on it. while working on the long arm, i saw things that i needed to improve on. so i just want to practice, practice doing pattern for the long arm quilting.

while i was at my family Reunion, i had a friend submitted a quilt for me, in a quilt challenge in the family day community festival. this is a festival that the quilting bee that i am in participate in. it is a quilt challenge and the community vote for the best. my quilt won first place. the theme for this challenge was music. i did tons of bead work on this piece. my husband told me that i better not sell this one.

a friend of a friend ask me if i would put some of my quilts into their quilt show that they are having next friday at their church. this will be their second quilt show. they are a small quilting bee and they would like to have a couple of art quilt on display. they are more traditional quilters. and she want something a little more different from what they do. if you are in the dc area come by Union Temple Baptist church on W street se. friday july 31, 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. i have never seen any of their work so i don't know what to expect. i was told that they are a beginner iwho also sew in this group. so if you have time stop on by and give these ladies some encouragement.

INSPIRATION

This is for Linda, about a week ago, linda asked me where do i get my inspiration to quilt. and the explanation that i gave her, i don't know if she understood what i was trying to tell her. i realize that i get my inspiration from life. what i see around me. just seeing what is around me gives me inspiration to quilt. i get my ideas from just looking at things, sometimes ideas come from dreams. i am just coming back from a trip and while i was on the train i was looking out the window and looking at the trees. i love looking at trees in the fall because of all the different colors of the trees. but i never realize that when i look at the trees, i don't see to many flowers. but on this trip all the trees were green and i was wondering where are all the flowers. and the next thing i know i am thinking about making a quilt with flowers and trying to work threadplay into this quilt. i also get my inspiration from other quilters. i love quilt shows and i love seeing other quilter's work on the Internet. seeing their work inspire me to try things, or try things another way that i am already working on. the inspiration to make this quilt was inspired my you linda, because the whole time that i was working on this i was think about the question you asked me and this quilt is call INSPIRATION.

this is what i am working on right now. since january, i had decided that i would do journal quilt pieces for a year and that they would all be thread painting pieces. i want to see how much of a progress i can do by the end of the year. this piece is coming out pretty good, it will be finish in a couple of days. for the last couple of months i have been working on a couple of pieces. take a look at what i have been doing.

sell or no sell

this is a piece that i showed at the retreat and someone wants to buy it from me. the problem is that i really like this piece. this piece i truly believe that i would put in a show if i had the chance to do. the person really want to buy if from me. she said that she told her husband about the piece and how she wanted to buy it from me. i told her that i am still trying to decide because if i sell it to her and then later want to put it in a show, she might not give it to me to put in a show. that is one thing about selling a piece to someone when you might want to show that piece later in a show. how do you go about doing this, and what if a show last for six month to a year. how are we suppose to work this out. their is a lot i have to think about. and what if i tell her that i want to sell it to her in late 2010, would she be willing to wait that long. and then again i can tell her that i am not ready to sell it yet, but she will be the first person i look for when i am ready to sell it. i really have to think about this. when this piece was hang up at the retreat everyone was asking who made this piece. i must say it did look. i never actually looked at the piece untill someone said something.

this piece was done all by hand. hand quilted and hand embellished i did a little pencil shading in some area's. the fabric was hand dye and i love it. i brought it at a show. i want some more of this fabric. i have tried dying fabric and my fabric never looked like this. grace if you are reading this, i have your piece of dye fabric that i won from your blog in this quilt. check out her blog people. (BARNYARD CHATTER) reading her blog and reading blackthreads convence me to try blogging. i was always afraid to try doing things on the computer. still kind of new at it, but it is getting easier. if you want to blog just do it.

the retreat was a success

the reason i was not posting anything was because i was trying to complete everything before the retreat and not tell you that i was one of the instructor for the retreat. i taught the thread play class, it went well and i was scared sh@tless.

the classes that i took, i kept messing up. i was doing everything wrong. in the picture piecing class i had to color code a floral picture to correspond with my fabric and i was coloring the picture and color coding with the color of the pencils and not the fabric. and their were a lot of tiny pieces. i had to start all over. in the needlepoint class, i was stitching the word love and the L was in the right place the O was up to high, the V was to low and looked like a U and the E, i don't know if it was trying to be a E or a fancy C. i should have wrote the word on the fabric and not try to do it free hand. i gave up and decided to to work on an unfinished vest that i found while i was looking for ugly fabric to auction off at the retreat. i kept changing color threads to top stitch the vest, so i just put that to the side. but after i did my class, i was able to come back and correct some of the things that i had done wrong in the other classes that i had taken.

my class went very well. there were a couple of people who were more advance than others and then their were some that i had to go slow with. my brake down of how to show the class how to do something, i was told i did very well explaining. there was one student who took my handout and follow the instruction by herself without waiting and only asked me one question. she completed the practice sheet in less than a hour and the class was four hours. she didn't do the final project, but she asked if she could leave because she had something else to do and she said that she has the basic and that if she had any problems she could ask me later. she said the class was great. by her completing the handout it showed that the handout was easy to understand. which i was afraid that someone might not understand what i was trying to explain. so i am glad about that because other students stated the same thing to me.

also at the retreat we showed our story quilt that we had a year to work on. i did two story quilts. one was about slavery and the other story quilt was about my childhood. all of the story quilts were great. some of the story's were very personal, some sad, some happy, some about people they admire, and some political. one of the story quilt was a jacket.

computer crashed

Yes, my computer crashed. no computer for almost a month. i lost everything on my computer. i have taken this laptop back twice and i am still trying to set up my computer back the way it was. i have lost pictures of quilts that i don't have anymore and information about how i was feeling when i made them. i am not going to bore you to long this time, because i still have a lot of quilts to finish by the end of this month. the quilt retreat is the end of this month and i still have not finished all of my quilts. so here are two pictures of some little quilts that i am working on. i can show these but the other quilts you will have to wait and see them after the retreat. so take a look. you know i love thread play so i have been playing with that for a while. the sun is from a book that i am trying out and i kind of like it. the authors instructions are very easy. the other quilt is done all my hand and you know i still love doing my hand quilting.

well i got a offer from a friend who reads my blog and she wants me to teach a workshop. her guild is having a retreat in 2010 and she wants to suggest that i teach a workshop. the thing is that i am so surprise that she is asking me. she said that i can give her an answer in a couple of months. and they are also willing to pay me a nice little fee. she also gave me good information on how to build a resume up on being a instructor. she had heard that i had done two workshops on fabric postcards and that the students enjoyed the workshop. well the first class, i was scared as hell. but the second time that i did the workshop, i knew what i needed to improve in and the workshop was much more fun. just to let you know it is not going to be another fabric postcard workshop. it is either going to be thread play or applique workshop. all i have to do is let her know. the reason that i don't want to do the postcards is because i am tried of making them. within the last year/half, i have made also 200 postcards. i have only about a hand full of pictures of the cards that i have made. most of the cards were made for service man and woman who were in military hospitals. i had friends and coworkers write on the back of the cards and they were sent to military hospitals to be given out, this was a couple of years ago. i also were in a couple of fabric postcard swaps. and right now it is time for me to move on to something else. i have given other workshops at the quilting bee that i am in, so maybe i can practice my workshop skill on them and see how i do before i give her an answer.

since i have had this blog their have been offers and suggestion from people who i have never thought would take time to even look at my blog. i would like to thank everyone who take a step into my messy blog. i have finally reached over the 4000 readers, reading my blog. MY QUILT BOOK/ COPYRIGHT

about a year ago one of my sister friends in a quilting group on yahoo, stated that we should keep records of our quilts. that we should put our quilts in a book and send it to the library of congress for copyright purposes. i was using the book called quilt register where you tape or glue picture of your quilts in the book and write information about your quilt. i was doing that for a year and i also kept a journal of my quilts on my computer with pictures of the quilts. two weeks ago while i was working on one of my quilts, i showed someone my quilt register book. pictures were falling out of my register quilt book. she suggested that i make a quilt book. that way pictures would not fall out of a printed book with my quilts. she stated that her son made a book from pictures of her wedding annversary. she showed me the book and i liked what he did, so i tried it out. and i am very please with what i made. their are a couple of family members who want to buy it. the site that i use does not give you the option to sell your book and make a profit. you can buy it from their site. but another site that i tried does give you this option, i just did not like their template. it was hard to work with, it does print in the book that you are the copyright person to the book and its pictures. the site that i use did not print this in my book. so i do feel that i still have to have my work register for copyright. i will have to check out how i can sell this book if i get a great demand from family and friends. i really was not trying to sell this book, i only just wanted to have a record of my quilts. i feel that there should be some type of record, to show that someone made this quilt or that quilt. i feel that a 100 years from now if i am not a famous quilter at least someone will know that i made these quilts because i have it documented in a book or a couple of books. their will be other books as i make more quilts.

the postcard workshop went very well. i have been asked to give another postcard workshop at the guild that i go to. this first workshop has showed me things that i need to change and improve in to give a better workshop. i am going to make notecard to help me when i do another workshop. we had great fun making the cards and i was told that i did very well explaining how to make the cards.

as i promise myself, i have started working on the quilt that i was to have started months ago. well, it is finally looking pretty good. it is a story quilt, something that i have never done. during the inauguration week i worked on this quilt and looked at the inauguration on the tv and sewed all day. i also worked on a stained glass quilt of president obama. one of my quilting friends email me a free pattern of a stained glass pattern of president obama. she felt that i could make it into a quilt so i tried it. also here is the website if you want to try to make it yourself. http://chantal-stainedglasspatterns.com/2barack-obama.html they also have other free stain glass patterns. during this time i also worked on other quilts. those four days off, just rolled along so smoothly for me, my creativity was just rolling along and i better take all of this creativity and keep these fingers going. so check out my work.

HELLO 2009

2009 is here and i already have too much to do in the next few months. the obama quilt is finish and it will be shown at the Miller Senate Office Building, 11 bladen street, annapolis, maryland. the building is open monday - friday(excluding holidays) from 9-5. the exhabit is through february 28, 2009. this is the Uhuru Quilters Guild presenting an american sampler, an exhibit of quilts celebrating patriotism, inauguration, and african american history on the third floor gallery.

sunday january 11th was the opening of the Quilts for Obama exhibit, at the historical society of washington, dc. 801 k street, nw, until january 31, 2009. some of the artist are marlene o'bryant, donnette cooper, sew chick elle, roland freeman, carolyn mazloomi, laura gadson, and sonja just to name a few. also Michelle obama family quilts are also on display at this exhibit. i truly enjoyed this exhabit. there is also an exhibit in silver spring, maryland, called President Obama: A celebration in Art Quilts: and will take place february 9- march 5, 2009 at the cafritz art center, 150 king street, silver spring, maryland (just outside washington, dc). this is the one i wanted to try to get in, but i was sick with the flu and had the wrong info about entering, so i just went and put mine into my guild exhibit. if you are in the dc area check it out.

this month i was also drafted into teaching a class on making fabric postcards. i don't know a thing about teaching a class, this will be the 24th of this month. i am trying to go to all of the exhibits to inspire me to get started on two quilts that i need to be completed by the end of april. i have bits and pieces on my design wall, but my brain just won't let me put these quilts together the way i want. i will try at it and then don't like it. i have started one quilt three times and just can't get it. i see now that i hate for someone to give me a topic or subject on a quilt to do, because i see that i just don't work that way. i have to feel it and when i feel it, i can in vision on how to do it and do it. it is just not happening right now, and they have given me a whole year to do this. one of the quilts is require of me to have completed to participate in a retreat in april. the other one i can push until june, this is not me. i am not like this, most of the time i am either the first or second person completing a challenge that was request of me. but this challenge is killing me. when i see the person that gave me this challenge, i say hi to her and then i say i hate you and she just laugh. and tell me that she know that i am going to produce something wonderful. yeah right, if she only knew. i am looking at this stupid design wall now and just want to throw this mess away and hide. believe it or not i am working on a piece right now for the retreat, sorry i can't show it, but is pretty nice looking. if only its could have been for the challenge, but it is not. ok, i feel stress out and i am going to stop looking at this stupid design wall and try to work on it this weekend.

i still have a few more things to do but i will talk about that another time.

i have alot to do. so if you are coming in don't stay long. and oh i have the FLU, yes, i said the FLU. so if you get sick for just stick your head in don't blame me. i am trying to finish my obama quilt and my body is just not letting me do that. all i want to do is sleep. my head is so clogged up and my ears are stopped up. i went to the doctor friday and all she said was to drink lot of fluids and rest. what the heck do she think i have been doing for the whole pass week. someone told me to try and take a few vitamin c pills and i kind of think they are helping. i going to take two more tonight and see how i feel tomorrow.

before i got sick, i had emailed a few quilting friends in my quilting guild to ask them if they wanted to do a holiday card swap at our holiday xmas party. we would exchange quilted postcards at the party. only four responded, but crazy me decided to make cards for everyone that i asked,. someone must have told another friend that was not on my list if they could join in, which is ok with me, that was friday. and today two more that were on my list ask if it was to late to join. which it is. i told them that i was making them one and that they could call the other people and ask them. i am not asking, i am still sick. this FLU must be making me think that i am superwoman and that i can make postcard for the entire guild. i have until december 20th to make as many cards as i can. i can only try.

hello, how are you. my husband's family have arrived early for thanksgiving. before they picked me up from work, my husband drove them around dc to see a few sites. the kids were screaming and hollering when he showed them the white house. tomorrow they are going sightseeing and planing to take pictures in front of the white house. me i am going to be running around getting a few things that was forgottten on our food list.

right now i am working on a obama quilt, that i am trying to complete. someone on the internet is trying to get some quilters to display obama quilts at the capital, so i am trying to complete mind as soom as possible. wish me luck. i know it's thanksgiving and i know you are asking when the heck is she going to have time to quilt. i don't know but i am going to try. so take a look at my piece and have a

cleaning house

thanksgiving is next week and i have about 35 people coming for dinner, and i have to clean the house. about ten of my family member are actually staying with us for the whole week. so i have to clean up the house. my bedroom and sewing room are the main two rooms that need cleaning. for some odd reason i just can not seem to clean these two room, when i am cleaning other parts of the house, i will start, but never seem to finish in these two rooms. my bedroom is slowly turning into another sewing room. when i am doing my hand sewing i am always sitting on my bed sewing. i have been working on a couple of quilts that i am trying to finish before the end of the year. the more that i sew the more mess, i make in my bedroom and sewing room.

their is stuff piled up on my work table, books that need to be put back on the bookshelf, fabric to be put away. and i am not going to talk about what is in the corner or on the floor. i even have to put my favorite pincushion away. i have a cousin who keep telling me that she is going to walk away with my pincushion. all my sharp objects have to be put away up high so that the children can not reach it. the children like to go to my computer room to play on the computer, and to get to the computer room you have to walk through my sewing room. so that means that everything has to be safe in my sewing room. now as far as cleaning my bedroom, i will do my regular cleaning of my room, but i do have to put fabric and a sewing machine and put down my layout wall away. and then again i just might leave the sewing machine and layout wall alone. the layout wall helps me to think of ways to lay out my pieces for a quilt. i have a piece up now that is giving me problems as to how i want to lay out the pieces. who knows i might get a little sewing done while everyone is sleep. i am addicted to sewing so you know i can not going without sewing for a week. because if i don't sew there are going to be some people who are going to see how a crazy quilter act. and they will not like me very much. so let me get started on cleaning up and i hope that once i clean up i will know where the heck i put stuff.

UFO'S

Yes i am still doing UFO's. my UFO pile in the corner is getting smaller. i have done six so far. this one that i am showing is for my mother. i was thinking about keeping it for myself, but i better give it to my mother, since i told someone that it was for my mom. i hope she use this one. the first one that i made for her she kept on her sofa to show to her friends. so maybe she will use this one when she falls a sleep watching TV. i have been busy working on a couple of other quilts, that i can not show right now because i was ask not to show them until after may. i was ask to make a story quilt and it is killing me to make it the way that i want it to look. every two or three week i call the person who asked for this and i tell her that i hate her. doing this project is so hard for me. she keeps telling me that she know that i can do this and that she is going to love it. i am not the kind of person who you can say, i want you to make a quilt about this. i can not do it. i have to feel the creation that i working on. i have to see it in my mind. if i can't see it, i can't do. so for the project that i was asked to do, pieces have been thrown into my UFO corner. if i keep throwing pieces in the corner maybe i can grab a couple of them and come up with something before may 2009. i know that if i keep throwing pieces into that corner it's going to pile up again. i hope not.

this is the quilt that my mother show to her friends. the quilt was one of my first photo fabric quilts. it is a old quilt and she loves it. the two quilts that i showed in the last post, i did find the brown to match the quilt to finish my daughters quilt and i did find a nice piece of fabric for the backing for the other quilt. my daughter's quilt i am going to send out to have someone to quilt and the other one i will get to it in a couple of weeks because i am going to work on one for my aunt. like i said, my UFO's are going to be gifts that are being given out for the holiday. why buy gifts when i can try to finish as many quilts as i can. these are not my art quilts, so i don't mind giving these up. i take that back there are a few i would like to keep for myself.

how is everyone doing. both of my computers were having problems, due to getting a new cable system. hubby got all the sports channel and i got no internet. that was not going to fly with me. they told me that i had to reboot everything and everything would be lost on both computers. i was not having it. it wasn't broke before i had cable, so i very upset. so it was back and forth with who should fix my laptop and computer. in the end the cable company fixed everything. while i had no internet, i did complete a few UFO's. i completed three and i am also working on three more. this first one that i am showing is for my daughter and her husband. it should have been finished two years ago, but i didn't have enough brown fabric. the second picture is a quilt top that is finish, but i didn't have enough fabric for the backing, i was 3 inches short of fabric. tomorrow i am going to a quilt show, so i hope to get fabric to complete these two pieces. so wish me luck.

i don't think so. but i did try. i said, i was going to do a demonstration of how i made the piece of my grandson. this piece that you are looking at is done all by hand. the piece that i made of my grandson is machine stitch, using straight stitch and zigzag stitch for his hair. while i was trying to do Obama by machine, i was working on his eyes and i forget to lift up the needle to move to another section of his face and i rip the fabric. so you know that piece went into the UFO pile. i was mad as hell. so i guess i will tell you how to do machine piece, and the hand piece, what i did first was find a picture that i like, trace it onto paper or clear plastic. for this one i use clear plastic with a black marker. then from that picture you trace it onto fabric. a quicker way is to run a piece of fabric that is 8 " x 11" that is iron onto freezer paper, threw your printer and copy the picture that you traced. if you are going to machine stitch your piece, put your fabric in a hoop with stabilizer under it. all you have to do is, straight stitch on the lines that you traced, go very slow. other people use the free motion foot and also have the feed dogs down. i keep the feed dogs down, but i use a regular foot. i have better control. practice first and see what is comfortable with you. if you are going to fill in the hair, you can zigzag stitch or you can just keep straight stitching the hair until it is fill in. if you are going to do your picture by hand you can use the running stitch or the back stitch. they look almost the same. use two strands of embroidery floss and just stitch on the trace lines. if you make a mistake with the hand piece you can take it out and correct it, but with machine the mistake is their.

UFO'S

Well, since my soul will not let me be creative, right now, i have decided to try to complete some UFO's that i have laying around here. i know that i am not the only person who have some thrown somewhere in a corner. if i complete a few before the holiday they will be gifts for some lucky family member. i have pieces that have been waiting to be quilted for several years. nice pieces that once i complete the top, i am on to the next. then there are pieces that i look at and say, what the heck was on my mind to do that. i have a UFO that is still in a corner somewhere in my closet that is called, Too Ugly For You. i am still trying to decide what to do with it. there are flowers, african prints, african figures and some more stuff in it. it is just too busy and i don't know what to keep and what to add. i am going to throw that one back in the corner until my creative side tells me what to do. when i look at some of these pieces that i have done several years ago, i see how much i have grown. how i have improved in some things and how some thing's still stay as they are. there is a style that people know i made it. but sometime when i step out the box and do something else they are like, that is not you, but it looks good. here are some pictures of what i am working a UFO, that will be someones gift and a couple of threadplay pieces that i have completed using freezer paper with no hoop. not knowing that i was suppose to use a hoop. the threadplay was kind of fun this time doing it, so after i finish a couple more UFO's i am going to try doing some more threadplay. so check out the picutures, and i will see you later.

not my best

come on in. this was one of my UFO's that was thrown in a corner, so watch your step as you come in. there are many more thrown around here. this is not my best work, but work made with lots of love. if it is made by me, you better believe it's made with love. because i love what i do. the reason i know this is not my best is because i know that i can do better. i put this piece together in three weeks, for a coworker that is leaving the country this friday. she has been giving me african print fabric for years. so what i did was completed this piece by adding pictures of her family and coworkers to this piece. i also used fabric that she has been giving me. where i work at people travel oversea alot and some bring me fabric back. if i had more time i would of made something different for her, but was afraid it would not be completed. i have been given mud cloth and fabric that i don't even know what it is. i like to do my best and when i know it is not my best, others seem to still like it anyway. the quilt was given to my coworker at a dinner party yesterday and she loved it. when push for time, i don't do my best. i have a project that needs to be completed by april. i haven't even started on it yet. i just need to draw it and get started. if i keep putting this off, it will not be right. most of the time i am usually one of the first to finish something. i just don't know why i can not start this. i don't know what the problem is. i know what i want. i just need to get started. making my coworker's quilt gave me a reason not to start on this project. now that i don't have anthing to do, what is stoping me now.

camera is still broke, so i will just show a few more of my old quilts. this first piece is raw edge applique'. i consider myself a hand quilter. this quilt was made by machine because at the time, i was having problems with my hands. this is call "healing hands #2". there is bead work on this piece which was done by hand and i suffer from it in the end. but when you love something so much, you deal with the pain. this is not a good picture of showing the bead work. there are beads on some of the hands, her neck, and breast. this next piece is my black history crazy quilt. done all by hand. it was fun not doing a piece that had to be square. the hand quilting stitching was fun to put on this piece. this third piece that i am showing is one piece that i know i will never let go. every time that i look at this piece, i remember when i started quilting, this piece it represent Juneteenth day. which is celebrated in June for the last slaves set free. one day i went to a juneteenth festival and there were some quilter there selling their quilts. they were also teaching people to make a nine patch block. i tried it and i was hooked. one of the lady's knew me and said, i know you can do this. i went home that night and made my first quilt. my first quilt was a mess, but i kept at it. this piece is a larger virgin of my june
journal piece that i made in 2006, without the quilt block in the left hand corner and a border added to this piece. i just love this piece. the middle piece is a whole cloth, that i drew a slave onto the fabric. machine stitched around the slave and then hand embroidery around the slave and the border piece. i also used colored prima pencils to color the slave. sometime i can draw pretty good and then there are days when i can't draw for nothing. their is a piece that i want to try to make now base on slavery or the election, but i can't seem to draw what i want. i am going to keep at it until i get it.

my camera is broke, so i am showing a few quilts that i have made in the pass. "i am not my hair," was a challenge quilt. it was two challenges that i made into one quilt. one was to use the blue fabric and the other challenge was to make a quilt base on the song call, "i am not my hair," by india aires. after this picture was taken india aires, signed the quilt for me at a concert. i love her music.

this quilt was made for my son. it is call "the shield." the shield of warmth, strength and love. i am also making a quilt for my daughter and her husband some what almost like this one, but a little different. once i get the camera fix i will take a picture.

this quilt didn't have a name for sometime. but last year (2007) one of my friends asked if she could lay this quilt on her son's casket. her son was kilt by violence. this quilt is now call the "homecoming."

today is my birthday. don't ask, i am not saying how old these old bones are.

i finally finished this piece. it's OK for a baby quilt. the entire piece was done by hand. it has hand embroidery baby bottles, strollers, and pregnant woman on the quilt. i know it not a good picture. double click on the picture, sometimes the pictures will enlarge. i am glad i finally finish this. it's time to start something else. this quilt is not me. i don't like pink, or that baby blue that people love to put on babies. give me bright colors. yellows, green, orange and some red. you won't believe it but most of the time i am wear ing dark colors, but i love for my art work to have bright colors. now a couple of years ago i made my niece a baby quilt and it had these cute bright colorful cats on it and she loved it. now that she has seen this one, she loves this one because it is more girly. she has a little girl. i looked at her like she is crazy. i keep telling people i don't do baby quilts. this is the second and last one that anyone will get from me. i don't have time to stress myself out over this.
now let me show you a close up of the completed challenge quilt that was shown at the family day community festival a week before the quilt show. the object of this challenge was for all of us to use the same fabric print and to use all three item that were give to us in a grab bag. well i went completely crazy with mind. i added beads, shells, buttons, keys, batteries, screws and computer parts. i also made this piece reversible. so here is the front and back. hope you like it.

almost forget to tell you. i tied in third place at the HANGING BY THE THREAD, III QUILT SHOW, in the art quilt category. peoples choice, for BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS. that is the piece that my friend asked me to add at the last minute. i only entered four and i wanted to enter more, but i got sick when i came back from my trip. i just grabbed anything just to have something in the show. i must say it worked out OK, because i tied in third place with someone else. that's a first for me, when i wasn't even trying. that's all for now.

pink is not my color

pink is not my color. here is a peek of what i am working on. pink is one color that i do not know how to match with other colors. i though white was a color that i don't like, but now i can add pink to that list. i have been busy working on this quilt for my cousin, who is having a baby girl. i had pink charm squares that were given to me years ago and just didn't know what colors to add to it. i love bold bright colors and pink is not on that list. my favorite color is black, i know that is not a bright color, but i love it. black is just about always somwhere in my work. i always have Michael Miller Jet Black in my house. now that i am thinking about it, it is time for me to make another order of this fabric. i have been working on this quilt for a week and i am almost finish. no black fabric added to this quilt, which was hard for me. when it is complete i will post a full view of the quilt.

and to those of you who know my cousin, please don't tell her this is for her. you all know i don't make baby quilts any more, specially with pink.

challenge quilts

Saturday was fun at the community rec center. The quilts looked gorgeous hanging on the clothes lines. The quilts challenge went great. Gwen won the peoples choice for the challenge quilt. Among our quilt group, we all had to guess who made what quilt. Gwen’s quilt had thousands of bead work on her quilt. So we all new it was her quilt with the bead work, since she likes to do bead work. People seem to know,my work and Gwen’s work. We have a style that everyone knows.

I had a few people thinking that I made the quilt with the lady, because there were a lot of hand work done on this piece and they knew that most of the time I like to do hand work vs machine work. my quilt is the one in the middle. people also thought that the quilt on the other side might be mine also. but everyone did pick mine as being my quilt. we also did a block exchange and only three of us completed our block exchange quilt. we exchange dress blocks. with my quilt i added shoes to the quilt.

here we have gwen's, charlene and my quilt hanging so beautifully.

i love these dresses, i just wish everyone had finished their dresses. just the fact that i know they are all going to be different, i can't wait to see the rest of the dresses when they are finish. here are a few pictures of some of the challenge quilts.

enough is enough

i was reading another blog, and the quilter stated when is enough, enough. she stated that she had made a quilt a couple of years ago and it was missing something. and she kept playing with it for a couple of years. i like her final outcome. well i did the same thing and i still don't like it.
the back ground fabric was hand quilted with a sun and a hut. but it seem to me that was not enough. so i started coloring the hut and the sun. but no i has to go and add another hut and hundreds of beads to the sun and the huts. that still wasn't enough for me to stop and say enough is enough. i marked the ground area with color pencils to make it look like dirt and dry grass. it is a total mess. i totally hate it now. i am trying to think of somehow to fix this. the bead work is ok but i don't like the body of the huts. i should have applique the huts. someone asked to buy it and me like a dummy said i wasn't finish yet. it should have been enough and sold. i am trying to think of a way to put real dirt on this piece for the ground area and just leave the huts alone.

but for right now i am going to just leave this piece alone. i have told myself that i am going to finish everything that i start this years. this is what i am pushing myself to do this year.

i finished the piece with the girl in the orange dress. the family reunion is thrown to the side again. i am just not feeling that piece. my challenge piece is finish. i will post that hopefully friday or saturday. the space alien brothers piece is almost complete. the only problem is, i need is to get some heat in my sewing room. the air conditioner has that room freezing cold. my bones are killing me. the weather is hot as hell outside, but my husband is freezing me up in this house. i am sewing in the sun room, sewing by hand. just so that i can get some heat on this old body. i will try in a couple of days to go backing to my sewing room. so enough is enough.

journal quilts

someone ask to see the 2006 and 2007 Journal Quilts. these are quilt pieces that i entered into the Journal Quilt Project for the international quilt festival. the 2006 journal quilt project consist of doing a quilt piece once a month that is 8x11" for nine months and to keep a journal of your experience. at the end of the nine months, you decide what five pieces you are sending them. two of the 2006 pieces were chosen to be in a quilt book, "the Creative Quilting/The Journal Quilt Project," quilt book. the two pieces are on page 161, title: Hi, I am a …., and Healing Hand. they are the first two piece in the picture here.

i also entered a 2007 piece that is call "Brotherman." for the 2007 piece i only had to do one piece that was 17x22" and you had to use three ideas from the quilt journal project quilt book. the two pieces from the book and the 2007 piece are still on tour with the international quilt festival. i am trying to decide if i am going to do the 2008 journal quilt, that is due by the end of august. i know what i want, but just have not decided how to do it. it is a beautiful picture i took on a trip last year.

Busy Month

The month of june will be a busy month for me. there are three things going on near the end of the month of june, family reunion, family day at the rec, and our guild quilt show. for the family reunion, i am trying to make a quilt for the reunion. family day the quilting bee that i am in, will be exhibiting our quilts at family day and we have a challenge quilt going on also. i just finished my challenge quilt. sorry no pictures of this one until after june 21st. i also have two other quilts that i am making for family day. i hope that i can finish all of these before the 21st.

here is one of the quilts that i am working on. this quilt is hand applique'. the cap is fabric that i used to make the cap look 3D. i don't know if you can see that in this picture. the hair is REAL dreadlocks, that i attached under the cap. and to my friends and family, no i did not cut my locs. i am a hand quilter who sometimes try her hands at machine quilting and with this piece that was not working so i am going to do this entire piece by hand. i am still having some health problems, but i am not going to let this stop me from doing what i love to do.

this next piece is machine raw edge applique' that i am trying to decide how i want the border to look. i want it to be kind of different. i am trying to think of the border with a bright color or something. so right now i am letting my brain rest on it for a couple of days. this piece will be machine quilted with added embellishments.

the family reunion quilt is not coming out the way i want it to be. so that is not going to be worked on until i finish the first two pieces. if the family reunion quilt is not finish in time i can still have my family sign the quilt. the family quilt is a signature quilt that the family will be able to sign their name. i don't like to use white fabric, and i think that is why i don't like this quilt. some of the pieces are white and i am trying to like this quilt and finish it. some of my friends have seen it and like it. i am the one that don't like it. i have to like my work in order for me to finish it. i know what i want, but i just haven't done it.

Blood on your hands

one of my friends emailed me and told me to make sure that I put, "Blood on your hands," in the quilt show. she said that this quilt truly moved her. i also was moved by this piece, when i was making it. seeing the red paint dripping from my hands made me wonder why it was so easy for this mother to kill her children. where was her family support and why didn't they see that this mother needed help. when my niece was a little girl her babysitter went through the same thing. something inside of her was telling her to kill the children. but her will power was strong enough to keep the children out oF the house until she could get help. IF AT ANYTIME YOU FEEL THAT YOU WANT TO HARM A CHILD PLEASE KNOW THAT THERE IS HELP OUT HERE AND THAT YOU ARE NOT ALONG. DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK.

today is a better day. i have decided what pieces are going into the quilt show for next month. the joker, the mask III, and call me mr. jazz. these are the additional pieces that are chosen.

their is another piece that i would like to add, but i don't know how, i want to add the sleeve to this piece. it is call "blood on your hands," this piece was made in memory of a mother killing her four daughters. the quilt is about 15 inches long and about 36 inches wide. i am trying to decide whether, to do a regular sleeve on the back or to make some hoops to hang from the top of the quilt. i can't seem to decide what to do.

i am just coming back from a quilting cruise and loved it. second day back in the states i had to call 911 because i was having chest pains and finding it hard to breath. they are saying i have gerd and a slow heart rate. now this chest pain is causing me to not what to sew and that is not me. all i want to do keep still so i don't have to feel the chest pain. next month the guild that i am in is having a quilt show and i have not sent in my quilt pieces yet. i haven't even decided which piece to send. and i have a few pieces to finish. i need to get to work on this. i did pick one and the only reason i pick this one is because i had the measurement for this one. some of the pieces that i want in the show i need to add the sleeve to the quilts.
